Media Studies (Film Opening) Week 6 - Storyline / Storyboard / Intention

27/Feb

Today, we discussed how we will fit scenes between storyboard scenes 1 and 2.

We had some ideas, which are:

orange mart scene (a mart whose name is orange; let us just use the word orange for orange mart scenes): protagonist hanging out with her best friend after school setting (This can lead to the next scene 2 after this—going back home scene—street scene), as a brief idea.

The protagonist and her best friend are in the classroom (year 12, which is our classroom), chilling together and watching Netflix or studying. cozy mood on the pillow of the scene.

Some more scenes of the protagonist in the corridor just above the sports court, beside the computer lab

Important point of today: we can take as many 'memory scenes' as possible, omit some, and add when we need them. We will need to edit later in the post-production stage if we have extra scenes.

01/Mar

Today, we finalized our storyboard. We got 16 scenes for total. But we need to discuss about the exact angle and camera movement of each scenes. This is our final storyboard for our production until now:

02/Mar
Today we set the protagonist's and antagonist's (her best friend's)  names. At first, we searched for the random name and thought that the protagonist was a Christian, so we set the protagonist's name as Grace. And her best friend's name is Olivia.

This is what Ruguosier said about the intended meaning of Grace's name: We use Bible names for the main character and use secular names for the best friend? to show that, in the beginning of the film, she is a Christian and her friend isn't'. I was also suggested the name, which is a normal name for a Christian name. Because our protagonist will find God's love later on in the story, I was thinking that it would be great if we put the protagonist's name as a non-Christian name at first and then convert her name into a Christian's name later on when she finds the love of God. as Saul becoming Paul. But at the same time, we thought we needed to show the protagonist was a Christian from the beginning. Therefore, we set the protagonist's name as Grace, a Christian name.

And lastly, Ruguosier, who suggested the idea of God's love in our story at first, gave us a reminder and an idea, which is this: It's about how we can give meaning to both the name of the main character and the title. For example, if the main character's name is Grace, we can have the story linked with something to do with grace. So basically, what I mean is that by grace, we are forgiven because of Jesus dying on the cross for us, right? So the main character comes back to the Bible, gets closer to God, gets to know more about his unconditional love for us, and decides to forgive her best friend because she was also forgiven of her sins'. With this, I was very thankful for Ruguosier to remind me of the full story and what we should think about on our project.

03/Mar

We clarified our whole storyline together. We couldn't meet in person, so Ruguosier was writing this storyline. But John and I were participating by giving ideas and combining the ideas.

Storyline:

Grace, a shy and introverted teen girl doing her IGCSE AS levels, finds it difficult to make friends since she doesn't want to be associated with people. She tends to overthink things and feels as though she would be annoying people if she spoke to them, so she avoids eye contact most of the time.

Olivia is an outgoing youngster in Grace's class who is about the same age as her. The two became friends. Olivia and Grace gradually became closer to one another, and they started spending a lot of time together. They attend the same events, belong to the same club, take the same subjects, and even hang around after school.

After almost three months of companionship, Olivia cuts off all communication with Grace, and their friendship breaks down. Grace was devastated because Olivia, who is an extrovert and has many friends, found it easy to move on. Since Grace only had one friend who abandoned her and went on without giving their relationship a second thought, Grace is totally lost, thinking about whether it was her fault or Olivia's.

Grace discovers her Bible one day while looking through old pictures of her and Olivia. A bookmark with the scripture verses "Ephesians 2:8–9" fell from her Bible when she opened it. The Lord reveals to her, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is the gift of God." Grace is still having trouble, but three days later, after experiencing various emotions and attempting to rediscover herself, she confides in God about her situation and discovers God's love for her. She also made the decision to forgive Olivia after seeing how much God loved her and how He gave his life for her. She reconciles with Olivia and makes an effort to be outgoing.

Grace slowly relays to Olivia how God created her and how he loves her. She invites Olivia to church with her, and after realizing that Jesus died for Olivia's sins, Olivia also comes to see how much she has hurt Grace.
